The South African Weather Service is the national provider of weather and climate information in South Africa and custodian of the South African climate databank. In addition, by law, only the South African Weather Service may issue severe weather warnings. The organisation therefore has an important role to play in assisting to minimize the impact of weather-related natural disasters and improve the well-being of its people. As a member of the World Meteorological Organisation, the South African Weather Service complies with international meteorological standards. As an Aviation Meteorological Authority, the organisation is designated by the State to provide weather services to the aviation industry, thereby fulfilling the international obligations of the government under the Convention of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
